Raymond Gustavson retired after working for the VA Regional Office in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he was a Rating Specialist(RVSR) on the Appeals Team. He earned a BS degree in Political Science from Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, TN, and extensive graduate credits in Political Science from Rutgers University.


Raymond is an avid reader, who writes fiction and non-fiction, and has published numerous articles. His novel, "A THIRST FOR WAR" was published by Gypsy Shadow Publishing on August 23, 2010.


Mr. Gustavson is a member of Vietnow, and a contributing editor to their publication. He lives in Sebastian, Florida, with his wife Barbara and a vivacious Labrador Retriever named Mary, who is being taught to sing 'barbershop.'

I grew up in South Florida, joined the Navy at eighteen, and found myself stationed far away from friends and family in beautiful Hawaii. I met a submariner there, we married, and had three beautiful children, before we moved back to the mainland. I now live in Connecticut and have found an unexpected passion in both writing as well as visiting schools, encouraging children to read, write, and not be afraid to follow their dreams!

"MY BLISSFUL LIFE" began as a humorous look at my marriage to a sailor, but it didn't take long for it to turn into a story about some of the challenges I faced as a military dependent, and how I overcame those challenges. I also think many people erroneously believe members of the military and their families have it made with free medical, dental, housing, etc. They don't realize that military families pay a high price for all the benefits they receive. Imagine missing the birth of a child, a baby's first steps, or a high school graduation? I wanted people to know how difficult military life can be on the families, and how sometimes, when there is a breakdown in the relationship, it's not always a bad thing.

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne spent her childhood at a riding school in Easton, CT. She has always enjoyed writing, and is a graduate of Children's Literature. She is also a member of Cambridge Who's Who. She has had one article published in 'Horsepower Magazine.' Her first book is "TAILS OF SWEETBRIER." It was published in 2009. Her second book is "CHARLIE THE HORSE." Deanie's essay will be featured in Publish America's new book, 'Why We Wrote.'


Deanie's other interests include: watching equestrian events, spending time with her husband Francis, and her sons Brendan and Shane, and their dog Elliot. She is an avid Yankee fan. She also enjoys music, and singing.

Deanie and Holly recently appeared on a local educational TV channel, where they were interviewed, conducted by a middle school student, who is a member in a journalism club. "TAILS OF SWEETBRIER" was used as part of the reading program in a school in Easton. Another school uses this book as part of their curriculum.

Holly was raised on an equestrian farm in the small town of Easton, Connecticut, now 'Lion Hill Farm.' At an early age, her formal training began under the teachings of Mr. Ray Quiqley, a renowned local Connecticut artist and illustrator. Country life inspired Holly's artistic talent. She has an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. While she studied at SMU, Holly majored in drawing and painting. After graduation, her career shifted to professional photography for several years. Recently, Holly returned to art as a profession, specializing in Equestrian portraits, family portraits, and children's book illustrations. In 2009, she illustrated "TAILS OF SWEETBRIER" and "CHARLIE THE HORSE." Both books are authored by her sister, Deanie Humphrys-Dunne. They will have a third book released soon titled "CHARLENE THE STAR." Holly's art has been featured in several local art shows. In addition, she has designed equestrian note cards, available for sale at local shops. Art has always been her passion, which she enjoys. Holly is a member of the Ridgefield Guild Of Artists.

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan in 1981 to a single mother, Regina Mayhawk. My mother got married to Walter Mayhawk when I was eleven, and we moved to Ann Arbor that same year. I went on to attend Washtenaw Community College to study Computer Technology, and decided to change my studies to Graphic Design.


After studying there for two and a half years, I transferred to University of Michigan School of Art & Design to study: photography; Video; 3D Modeling; and Graphic Design. I worked various jobs as I gained experience in Graphic Design as I designed logos, magazines, layouts, and business cards. After graduating in 2008 with my BFA, it wasn't until after six months when I landed my first job as an illustrator for Sherry O'Neal, the author of children's book "LJ and the Dreammaker." While in the process of finishing the illustrations for Sherry, I wrote my first children's manuscript titled "MEET POOKY." After finishing the manuscript in December, I pushed the story aside to look for more illustration gigs. I was doing research on publishers, and building the look of my character, while my manuscript was collecting dust, during those months. I finally got self-published with XLibris Self-Publishing Company on June 22, and my book was released August fifth.


I am currently in the process of writing my next two manuscripts, based on the character 'Pooky'
that I created. I will also be illustrating for the remainder of my books in the book series. I hope to also write screen plays for feature films in the near future.

Ziana de Bethune 'officially' began her writing career in 1992, with the release of "PERSISTENCE PAYS." Unofficially, she was biten by the writing bug at twelve years old, when her teacher gave the class an assignment to write a 'Remembrance Day' poem. At the time, she thought, 'Are you crazy?' I'm no poet.

'Give me a break!' But, she did as she was told and once she began writing, the pen itself seemed to take over. The end result was a poem that was forty-nine lines long, and impressed her teacher so much, that she suggested it be entered in a provincial contest. Her folks packed up and moved the family out of the province, before the results of her entry arrived, but that didn't matter. She hasn't stopped writing since. A painfully shy girl coming from what some would call 'the wrong side of the tracks.' Writing and other forms of art provided her with an outlet to express herself. A little known fact is that Ziana lost most of her hearing from inner-ear infections at age nine, and had to learn lip reading and body language to hide her handicap. She spent most of her early years in self-imposed isolation, never feeling as if she would 'fit in.' But, her stubborn, ambitious streak eventually won over. Her background and her handicap became challenges to be met, rather than obstacles to overcome. 

Ziana has gone through many career changes, from a jeweler's apprentice to professional modeling, to dance instructor to accountant and has even held down a few assembly-line jobs, always searching for her 'niche.' Like love itself sometimes is, it was right under her nose the whole time, writing. As 1990 opened a new decade, she wrote a full-length novel, which was later accepted by a publisher in the USA, and launched her career in 1992. Never one to follow the rules, she writes in many genres, using different pen names. 

Writing set her on the path to speaking at conferences, and workshops. The evolution of her career, and so many years of working hard to learn the craft on her own and from professional mentors, eventually led her to a place where she was qualified to become a judge for national and international writer's contests. She has written fiction, non-fiction, biographies, and how-to articles. Several years ago, she wtote a full-length ebook entitled "WRITE YOUR BOOK: A No-Nonsense Guide To Writing Fiction" and gave it away free to anyone who clicked on the link to her website. Several thousand copies were distributed, and some were used in classrooms. Some said it was the most comprehensive learning tool that they had ever found, touching on topics, and offering suggestions that no-one else addressed. Her suggestion to anyone who wants to write is this: "Don't let anyone convince you that you can't." Son of a hospital head cook, Nikolaus Baker was born in the rural village of Mauchline. This friendly once mining village is situated in west of Scotland, Ayrshire, about thirty miles from Glasgow. Steeped in Scottish History from the Covenanters to the life and works of Robert Burns, who also lived in the same village. Nikolaus was educated at Auchinleck Academy in the early 1970s and attended various technical colleges part-time, obtaining various scientific qualifications and later graduated, while in full-time employment in 1993, with a BA degree with the Open University.


Nikolaus has had many interests and in his early teens, he was a keen Scout, gaining his Chief Scouts Award. An enthusiastic hill walker, and also completed some rock climbs. Always keeping fit, Nikolaus would be first to admit it, he would never harm a fly, and prefers running to fighting!


When he left school in the 1970s, Ayrshire, which was an unemployment black-spot and the main employers being coal mining industry and the plastics factory, soon found himself on the dole. His scientific interests merited him for a job in education as a laboratory assistant, cleaning at first test tubes, and science laboratories. Strangely enough, this first job was with the same academy he had left, only months before! This seemed quite funny, when his friends would joke with him. He gained promotion as a lab technician, after studying for many scientific qualifications, with a special aptitude in Biology, and Chemistry. It was while working at Irvine Royal Academy, he met a friend who had a hobby with microcomputers, and Nikolaus became quickly spell-bound by this quick moving technology. He enjoyed working in the schools, and always found helping the pupils very rewarding.


Moving to find work in Glasgow in the mid 1980s as a computer technician, he was always eager to learn, and help both lecturing staff and students with their project work. He moved on again to a higher position of analyst/Programmer in the Council. It was at this time that he met and married his wife Aileen, and they have two boys, and a daughter.


Always one for keeping up with new technology and new challenges, he worked with several other large employers, before his interests turned towards management.


Fately, this was a strategic pitfall for him, finding himself quickly unemployed, through no fault of his own. With a small government run company, he realized too late, that he had been only required for the relocation of premises and launch of this company, finding out the hard way that ego centric personalities came into play and it didn't matter how good you were at your job or whether you had a family. Out of a job, and his family plummeted straight down, and onto the breadline.


This sent Nikolaus into a spiral, moving through different jobs in the same line, but none provided them with the security they required. Working for a once successful electronic company, specializing in printed circuit boards, the spectre of redundancy loomed even closer and once again with no alternative, but to try I.T. management again.


Baker had always been one to stand up and voice his opinion, when he believed that things were wrong whereever he found it and he would stand up for the underdog, knowing fine well that there were some hidden agendas, and hit lists. On one such occasion on his first week of employment, Baker was advised that he would have to sack an individual! This did not go down well with him, after all, a spade was always a spade with Baker, and he too found himself out of a job again. Battling between employer power plays and oversized egos, were too much, even for him. His wife and family stood by him, and they braved the storms once again.


Completely disillusioned with the way his world had become and out of a job, and as luck would have it, he applied to a small family I.T. Business in Glasgow, securing a position in part of the I.T. Development team in a niche market. He made many friends, and had a lot of respect for this small firm. It was a tough job, where your position was always on the line, but Baker had great respect for an American Manager, and they both spoke directly with each other on different occasions. The company never took on dead wood, and Baker found friendship, and much achievement in this company. It was a firm, where a spade was a spade!


One day in the early millennium and out of the blue, Nikolaus was diagnosed with cancer. The company supported him through this difficult time, and for which he was very grateful. Mr. Baker also eternally indebted to all those who helped save his life, and Nikolaus has made a full recovery. He thanks his Doctors at the local health centre for their help, the surgeon in Ayr Hospital-Ballochmyle suite, who performed the surgery, and their Nurses. He also thanks the Radiotheraphy Department, Consultants, Nursing and support staff, stationed at the Beatson in Glasgow.


As a young man, he always liked reading fiction books, and in his early twenties, attempted to write his first book. He felt that he had a good story, but it proved too difficult at that time. Although he had the imagination, Nikolaus did not have the experience in life, and knowledge. Twenty-three years later, he had gained all the experience he needed! There is an endless wealth of knowledge on the internet, but found also that nothing is better than going to the library to research various topics, cross checking fact from fiction, or being in a place and feeling the atmosphere to stimulate the mind. With all the wheeling and dealings and hidden agendas, studying the different colours of human personalties and emotions, put-downs and power-plays, Baker was fully equipped to entertain and is now quite capable to mess with your mind.


Writing the book to him has been both extremely challenging, and at the same time therapeutic. His secret passion of writing a book is one in which he has had since a boy, and now it would be realized, and come to fruition with GODSCHAIN.  "GODSCHAIN" is a series of books, and the first being 'GENESIS' and 'THE FIRST DEGREE.'  What better a background than being born in a place full of history, including the enigmatic Freemasons villages and towns to the summary killing times of the Covenanters, and religious tensions in Scotland, mixed with manipulation of human life by those people of power?

"You Only Live Once, Make The Most Of It!"

John Halsted was educated at Westville Boys High, just outside Durban, South Africa, where he spent more time on the sports field. This is where he was gaining honours for athletics, and just managing to graduate. His lack of interest in academic work led his teachers and parents to despair, while his coach rejoiced.


In the two years following high school, he commenced national service in the South African Air Force, and spent more time on athletics tours and having a good time, never fully committed to the defence of aparttheid as his Sergeant Major will readily testify. After completing his national service, he used London as a base, and spent the better part of eighteen months cycling around Europe.


On returning to South Africa in 1980, he found a job as a shipping clerk and when the opportunity presented itself, he transferred to Johannesburg, only so he could continue his athletics career. In 1982, he found himself managing a container depot. It was here that he was run over by a seven-and-half ton forklift truck, and his athletics career brought to a screaming halt, literally and figuratively. He spent three months in an orthopaedic hospital recuperating. It was also at this time that the Western nations applied strict sanctions against South Africa, due to the country's apartheid policies, and the shipping industry all but died. Not long after leaving the hospital, he found himself out of a job, and without any marketable skills. The easy times were over, he had to skill up.


In 1983, he found employment as an internal auditor, with a major motor manufacturer. Searching for the ideal career, he later transferred to the Accounts and Finance department. In 1985, he went to night classes, and trained as a computer programmer, later transferring to the I.T. department.


In 1986, he met his future wife, Joy. She was a Kiwi Occupational Therapist, on assignment from the International Leprosy Mission at Westfort Hospital, Pretoria. They married in 1987 and in 1988, they moved to Auckland, New Zealand, where they had two children.

In 1991, John and his family were transferred from Auckland to Wellington. In 1994, he moved into project management, finally finding his ideal career. This gave him the fun, the chalenge, and the variety he requires. Their third child was born in 1996, and their fourth in 1998.


In 1999, the family moved to England, the birth place of his Grandmother. In 2001, he made a poignant journey to Poland and Stalag VIII-C, where his father was a POW. Always relishing a challenge, he had cycled 300m/480km from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean through France, along the Canal du Midi and 500m/800km across northern Spain, on the way of St. James.


In 2000, he started a part-time MBA at Bath University, which he successfully completed in 2002. On completion of his MBA, he realized just how much time he had on his hands, and commenced an in-depth personal study of Viking history, from which his family are allegedly descended. In his research, he discovered that Vikings who travelled East across Europe, and along the Silk Route, were more interesting than family trees. It didn't take much to convert his research into an Historical Action and Adventure novel. He was stunned to find himself a finalist in the ForeWord Book of the Year awards in 2006. He is currently researching, and writing a sequel.

Since then, I have my second novel, scratch that, I've scrapped the second novel due to overwhelming frustration and a pathetic lack of motivation.
